No More LandLine Service!!

T-mobile is about to roll out a new service called "T-mobile at Home". T-mobile has been testing the service in Seattle and now will launch it sometime in the summer.

The service will allows cell phone to switch from cell towers to available WiFi hotspots when a user comes within range of a hotspot. This would allow the user to make and receive calls either through VoIP over a WiFi hotspot while using the same cell number and handset.

Wi-Fi & Apple News

Well I’m back from hiatus! Lets see if I can bring everyone up to speed on the Wi-Fi current events, although I’m sure you all have searched else where for this info.

Well for starters – Mesh network AP’s are stated to double by 2010. For those that don’t know what Mesh AP’s are - Wi-Fi meshing allows wireless access nodes to achieve a longer range by using each other as repeaters.

What is it with these Big Corporations? Now that Apple Inc.is no longer Apple Computer do they think they can screw all of us?

According to some reports and they vary…Apple's new Macs will come with 802.11n Wi-Fi technology but here is the catch!!!

Apple plans on charging you anywhere from $2.00 -$5.00 to unlock the technology. What a shame first it's $500.00 for a cell now this!

20 Things we still don't know about the iPhone!!!

I will be upfront...I am not an iPod fan! I won't got into details but let's just say that they have good markerting or there are plenty of gulible people. So here we go with a quick top 20 things about the iPhone.

1-What will be the true cost...we know its$599 for the 8GB model and $499 for the 4GB phone but what about the monthly fees & data plan??

2-Will there be an unlocked version & if so how much for that version?? Dare I say $1000!!!

3-What happens if you damage your phone, what is the replacement cost? What would the insurance cost...more fees to consider before make a purchase.

4-How fast is the touch screen of theiPhone?

5-iPhone runs OS X really?

6-Will it sync with windows apps?

7-Can it be used by business people or like the blackberry, treo or smartphones?

8-Will it work with Word, Excel & PowerPoint?

9-Can it be used as a modem for laptops?

10-Can it withstand the everyday use or a multi-purpose device?

11-Will the iPhone have to change its name because of Cisco's lawsuit?

12-Is the on screen key board practical?

13-Can you make VOIP calls on it?

14-Why no 3G on the phone?

15-Will there be 3rd party software for the iPhone?

16-Why just Cingular? You would think that they would want to market to the largest amount of people not just Cingular users.

17-Will there be wi-fi sharing feature like the Zune?

18-Will the iPhone eat into Apples iPods sales?

19-will it be able to produce enough to meet demand?

20-Will people really go out and buy it if they already have an iPod?

Philly Wi-Fi

Well Philly has rolled out their Wi-Fi or at least a 15 square miles of it. They couldn't just sit and let Google make all the news on the wi-fi front!

Cingular No More!

We should have all know this was coming once the AT&T deal was approved. Well according to Reuters, starting next week AT&T will be begin eliminating the Cingular Brand. They sure did not was any time with this idea.

The Freedom to be Mobile!

According to the New York Times, “we are seeing the emergence of the fourth screen”. We already have the TVs, Computers & Movies Screens now it’s the arrival of the Smart-Phone Screen. The smart-phone has been around for a few years. I bet we all know some who is a “Crackberry addict” but they were mostly limited to business people. The smart-phone has now become main stream especially with some smart-phones now being wi-fi enabled.

Cell phone carriers are providing more services to complement our smart-phones such as music & TV downloads (Verizon with VCast). Sony & Nokia already have portable handheld devices that are very much like laptops. Soon there will be no need to have a laptop to conduct business or school work. Soon we will all be connected one way or another with one device serving multi-purposes.

Part III Google's Wi-Fi

Well for those of you that do not have the time or just do not want to read the wonderful 48 page document...I took a quick look at it.

Here are some major points that I found interesting.

There is no mention of Google anywhere in the document. There is mention of the "Basic Service Plan Provider" which in essence is what Google would be doing in the project so I guess we can assume this to still be the case. Unless Google is out of the picture - highly unlikely!

The other important feature of the agreement is that wi-fi service will be provide on different levels - I think we know that would be the case.

I am sure there will be much more news in the coming days or weeks - so let's see what happens!

Part II Google's Wi-Fi

Well folks I told you I would keep you informed. As mentioned in an earlier post an agreement has been reached!!

We if you want to read the 48 page official documents between the city of San Francisco to provide Wi-Fi & write your opinion, please do so. I will take a quick lok at it and se if there is anything worth mentioning - so stay tuned.

Remember, this still has to be approved by the City board Supervisors....which can still delay the process but at least there is a formal agreement.

Well as soon as the city board supervisors approves the aggreement I will make sure to let everyone know.

Surfing at the Beach.

It's not what you think folks! The surfing I'm talking about is interenet surfing. Wired News has an article on wi-fi beaches. Get a hold of this... there is even a nude beach in FL with wi-fi. I guess you can leave your pants home but not the laptop.

Google is at it again!

According to MarketWatch, Google & Earthlink are close to finalizing a deal on their plans for Muni-Wide Wireless network in San Francisco. We have been hearing about for months but negotiations have been slow. Any deal would have to still be approved by San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors, which have been partially involved with the delayed negotiations.

If a deal is struck, they would move on to the construction phase. So Google & Earthlink are not out of the woods yet.

AT&T's push to sell wireless ads & Wi Fi in your Car

Now that AT&T and Bell South deal has been approved see link AT&T plans on selling advertising on cell phones later this year. AT&T will also begin selling wireless service under the AT&T name and start phasing out the Cingular name. For more details click AT&T said to plan wireless push

Talk about being connected all the time…according to the NY Times, Avis will begin offering rolling HotSpots in their cars come March. The service is now only intended for business travelers but that is sure to change. Avis plans to make a formal announcement in about a week. We will keep our eyes and ears open for that announcement.
